I'm swimming in support of my beautiful and courageous daughter, Jess.

Some of you may know, mental health challenges have struck our family over the years and at times, quite hard. We’ve watched our girls battle through some really challenging times. I can only speak for Adrian and myself by saying how hard this is from a parent’s perspective. Every tiny piece of you wants so desperately to help them and take away their struggles, their pain.
Adrian and I had no idea how to handle things and, in a way, felt like we were stumbling our way through each day and didn’t ask for help outside of our family (our amazing family). The only way we knew was to talk to each other at night, cry with each other most nights, and to hope that the next day was going to be at least a tiny bit better than the last.
Without going into detail, as their stories are not mine to tell, I can only tell you from our perspective that it has been the hardest challenge we have had to go through. We have rolled with the punches mental health challenges can give and ironically Adrian and I became even closer as we dealt with each sucker punch blow together, united. That ultimately kept our heads above water, even though the immense feeling of helplessness kept trying to push us down.
One piece of advice I got from a dear friend was to love them no matter what. Yes you will get frustrated because you’ll feel out of control and can’t help them, (because trust me if this ‘thing’ was a person I would have unleashed Mumma bear onto it!) But just do the simple thing of ‘love them’ with all you’ve got. Not only did it help to give me a focus, it reminded me, both of us, just how much love we have for them even in a really dark time.
I hope more than anything that our girls feel unshakable love and support from us. We’ve watched them grow into beautiful humans over the years and the immense pride we have for them, well without sounding cheesy here, they’re our heroes. The strength and determination they’ve had to muster to get to where they are is incredible. Some days the struggles are still taken one step at a time, but that step keeps being taken and we will always be by their sides.
Jessica and I are participating in ‘Laps for Life’ in March. A brilliant program for Youth Mental Health support. If you can donate, please follow the link.
If you are unable to donate, that is ok. Your support is hugely appreciated. Please help me cheer Jess on while she smashes this goal of hers. To raise awareness of something close to her heart. She has a lot of love to give, to support others and for them to not feel alone.
Lets all be there for each other, for our kids, even if you can be a beautiful positive influence on others kids. I really feel there is a lot of power to make lasting impacts on other people’s kids as they listen to you! Lets face it, they don’t really listen to their own parents do they! Tell them how amazing they are, how valued they are, hear them, be present with them. It costs absolutely nothing but can mean the world.

Did you know suicide is the leading cause of death for young people in Australia?

That means that each year more young people die by suicide than in car accidents or from cancer.

This March, I'm swimming to make sure young people in Australia have the mental health support they urgently need.

By sponsoring my challenge, you’ll be helping to prevent youth suicide.

All funds raised will help young people feel better about today and the future, no matter what challenge they're facing.
