Out of my depth 5/3/2024

  • This is my second year diving

  • in for youth mental health

Swimming is not the most ‘natural’ thing for me.  Deciding to swim laps is therefore more challenging for me than other pursuits.  But it’s pushing against the tide that makes the challenge more important and more personal.  This is not meant to be ‘easy’ and each time I get into the pool I want to be getting in for someone, who like me, finds some things in life, or about life, challenging.

We are living in times where money is tight, discretion in spending is critical and looking after others has become paramount.  For every person that I know who has been touched by suicide there are countless others.  We do all need to be mindful and vigilant to try to lower the numbers of those who succumb to thoughts of suicide and to the act of suicide.

It takes a village!  One swim at a time.

Thank you for donating. Thank you for caring.

Did you know suicide is the leading cause of death for young people in Australia?

That means that each year more young people die by suicide than in car accidents or from cancer.

This March, I'm swimming to make sure young people in Australia have the mental health support they urgently need.

By sponsoring my challenge, you’ll be helping to prevent youth suicide.

All funds raised will help young people feel better about today and the future, no matter what challenge they're facing.

Last Laps

It’s only 7 days from finishing this swim.  25 days of swimming has been a stark reminder of the need to break the cycle that so many young people find themselves trapped in.  So far the distance I have covered is 16.4 kilometres…that’s good progress towards my goal of 20 kilometres but my donations need a boost.  It isn’t easy asking for money but when the cause is so great the task is not as difficult.  One more week, lots of laps and hopefully some more dollars to help fund this amazing event. Xx

Hitting the Halfway Mark

Last year at my place of voluntary work, a couple of staff members spent quite a long time writing messages on stick-it notes that were pasted onto every locker in the women’s change room, on the mirrors and doors and pretty much wherever they felt would provide a reminder that someone cared.  It was a huge undertaking, not just the writing of the notes, but the initial thinking about someone else that created a desire to reach out to other people.  A constant message seen posted in other places is a sign that says: “In a world where you can be anything, Be Kind.”  The sentiment is lovely but it was generated from abusive behaviour by the public to those who were seeking to serve them.  All of these things are reminders to ‘pay it forward’, to give without seeking to get and to being gentle on ourselves and to others.  At the halfway mark in my swimming I am feeling blessed if in some small way, I can be a blessing to others. Kindest of regards.

One week down!

Well one week down but three to go and mindful that I need to keep pace with doing 5kms a week to reach my goal.
I’m more of a morning person and try to swim before breakfast each day.
Young people don’t have the luxury of knowing themselves as much as older people do.  They need life experiences, good ones preferably, to get to know who they are, their strengths and weaknesses.
If this one week can help to place a young person in touch with helpful mechanisms then let the swimming continue, well past the end of March.  Every stroke is a reminder.💐
