Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australian youth.
I have known of a shocking number of people who have taken their own life, but had never understood the true severity of the pain and tragedy experienced by entire families and communities until the death of Matilda Rosewarne.
I met Tilly when she was 10. She was funny and silly and sassy and I had a great week messing around on her families property. Although I only saw her a few times after this, her cousins, whom my family has grown up alongside and is very close with, kept us up to date on her and her little sisters' goings on throughout the next few years.
And it was only 6 years after that, at the age of 16, that we were told she had taken her own life.
The raw pain experienced by everyone who loved Tilly and the tragedy of what she went through is something I will never forget, and indeed think of often.
The ongoing trauma and grief of everyone who loved Tilly has been devastating, and honestly eye opening. As someone who considered it often in my darker times, it's horrific to think something similar could have befallen the people in my life.
It is for Tilly I am participating in laps for life, and it is for others like her I hope the money raised can help save.
Please consider donating so Australian youth can have greater access to the mental health support they desperately need. No one should have to experience what Tilly's family is and always will.
