I'm swimming to save lives

  • This is my third year diving

  • in for youth mental health

It’s impossible to pin down exactly why folks are suicidal but the world we live in can be tough - We live in a cost of living crisis, a world that pummels forward with unrealistic and uncaring expectations and a loneliness epidemic and the most horrific consequence of this is truly the suffering and suicidal ideation that many experience because of this. Suicide is a deeply painful topic for many to discuss and be truthful about; when folks are struggling with ideation they may feel like they don’t want to scare or harm people who love them so they turn inwards and keep their pain a secret. This is deeply heartbreaking and we must strive as much as compassionately possible to reduce the stigma and shame surrounding how folks open up about this hardship. However a way forward that provides hope is that there are many amazing mental health providers and services that provide free, impartial, non biased, accessible and safe place for those to turn too and confide in, and receive help and support from that feels less scary unfortunately than turning to those they love. I personally love ReachOut Australia which is why I’m currently doing the ‘Laps for Life,” challenge. I’m 8km in and have 22km to go until I reach my goal of 30km.

1 in 4 young people in Australia are currently experiencing a mental health difficulty. But there’s an even bigger problem: 70% of those who need help don’t get it. And, suicide remains the leading cause of death of young people in Australia. That means more young people take their own lives each year than die in car accidents.

I’m hoping to raise $1000 and would love to increase that goal. If you choose to donate: your donation will support Australia’s leading online mental health organisation for young people and their parents, ReachOut, to continue the amazing work they do.

ReachOut provides practical support, tools, and tips to help young people get through anything from everyday issues to tough times - and the information they offer to parents makes it easier for them to help their teenagers too. Last year alone, ReachOut was there for more than 2.8 million young people across Australia.

Thank you again for your generous donation and support of my Laps for Life challenge.
