Low-key Lappers!

And that’s a wrap

On the penultimate day of the challenge, I’ve completed my last swim for the month with another 300m and 100m+ of pool walk. The commitment was there to round out this charity challenge today, despite done less-then-ideal weather conditions! Sadly, I did not quite make the 2km of swimming laps in the end, but coupled with walked laps, I totalled over 3km in the end. It was great getting back into the pool, all while raising some much-needed funds for mental health. Well done to the team for all their amazing efforts too!

Swimming towards the end

So tonight, I’ve logged swim only for the first time, as I hit a full 350m swimming without too much shoulder angst. Win. The question now, is can I hit my original 2km target as swim only with only six days to go? By my count, I’ve done 1,050m of ‘legit’ swimming to date. I think. But I should also add, the total distance for today was 650m. Progress feels good!

Coming good for a night swim

Well after kicking off this twofold challenge - being getting back into the pool/swimming and the obvious fundraising charity effort - with a spectacular stack and shoulder hurts, tonight I pushed it out to a whole 200m of *actual* swimming! And night swims may well be my favourite. I do wonder how the body will feel in the morning though? ☺️

Blown away

It’s a bit of a blowy day in Perth today, making today one of the chilliest swims, despite being the middle of the day! And in positive news, the shoulder is starting to come good, meaning I got a solid 200m of *actual* swimming in! (As usual, there was another 300-odd metres of pool walk laps in too). So my official ‘real’ swimming total has now hit 650m. Progress. 👌

Katanning pool - weekend laps & rural murals

I couldn’t speak more highly of the small but mighty Katanning pool. Outside, 50m lap pool, crystal clear and relaxed. And look at the epic mural - read: ‘Rural Mural’ - on the wall beyond. So good. It makes me smile. For more classic ‘Rural Murals’ throughout Australia and more of the spirit that inspired this post, visit the mural archive project by the late, great Robbie D. A giant in the game, whom, without knowing personally, I felt great admiration and comradery with online. Note to self

Don’t trip and injure yourself on the first day of a swim challenge. It really makes the whole ‘swimming’ thing very difficult. But despite a particularly bad shoulder day (ow), I managed another 100m of legit - albeit sedate - swimming, coupled with at least 150m walked laps again. Small wins. And first ‘night swim’ achieved!

Another one down

Yay! I managed a few legit laps today! They were *so* slow, and my shoulder is definitely feeling it, but an accomplishment post-stack injury, so that’s a win!

First before work swim ever for carly!

and I saw this car in the car park. TALK TO YOUR MATES before it gets too heavy. Or thereabouts. I felt seen, inspired, a tinge of sorrow and a dollop of synchronicity. I felt light walking away, it was going to be a good swim if people like that are in the pool. And I’m pretty sure they were. I’m going to check out their project - Regional Men’s Mental Health and podcast https://regionalmenshealth.com.au/category/podcast/ …maybe you’d like to?

Pool walks count, yeah

So after Saturday’s success, I went a did myself a doozy of a stack that night, complete with head injury assessment in ED. But my left shoulder t seems to have taken the brunt of things, leaving me with pool walking as my only option today. Hopefully I’ll be back swimming by the weekend!

My why…

TLDR: for myself, for them, for joy! Thank you body!

Anyone else hum as they swim?

I’ve realised that on certain days I want to just listen to the woosh of bubbles. On others, I hum. It has become a bit of a chant in recent times. Sometimes even singing. In joking with my partner Joe about my new habit, we remembered my nick-name (read: long name) that my Mother would call me by throughout my childhood…and sometimes still to this day: The Dolphin Of The Deep Blue Sea. It’s funny how things come back around and ring true - through the water - thick with bubbles, always. Now that I’ve finished being a poet - thanks so much to the folks that have joined my “low key lappers” team. It really has me feeling connected with you all…near and far…old and new. So much thanks for lapping with me.

We’re swimming to raise $ for ReachOut & remember loved ones gone too soon

Did you know suicide is the leading cause of death for young people in Australia?

That means that each year more young people die by suicide than in car accidents or from cancer.

This March, we’re swimming to make sure young people in Australia have the mental health support they urgently need.

By sponsoring our challenge, you’ll be helping to prevent youth suicide.

All funds raised will help young people feel better about today and the future, no matter what challenge they're facing.
